Job Summary

The Sr. Director, Quality & Food Safety position will oversee the Spectrum Brands’ Global Pet Care Division Quality, Food Safety, and Consumer Relations team ensuring the delivery of safe, high-quality products. The Sr. Director of Quality & Food Safety Compliance will lead the quality and food compliance program with responsibility for regulatory compliance with all internal, regulatory (FDA, CPSC, USDA, EPA), food safety, quality, product safety, and customer standards. The role is responsible for building the quality and consumer relations organization, establishing metrics, standards and policies, implementing training and compliance programs, managing audit programs, overseeing the management of suppliers and contract manufacturers in quality, food safety, and product safety matters and representing the Company in dealings all applicable regulatory agencies. In addition, they will be expected to provide critical quality, food safety, and product safety leadership through risk-based management systems and promote a sound quality and food safety mindset and culture at every level of the global organization.

 

**This position can be 100% remote work from home.  Travel to our manufacturing facilities and corporate offices will be required, up to 50%*

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

  • Serve as the senior authority on quality, food safety, product safety, and regulatory compliance, with responsibility for advising senior leaders on all issues affecting product quality, food safety, product safety, and food regulatory compliance.
  • Develop food safety plans and training programs to ensure compliance with the requirements of the Food Safety Modernization Act, supervise regulatory, food safety and quality leaders in the FDA regulated business operations and, where necessary interpret food safety policies, procedures and FDA regulations for such leaders.
  • Provide guidance and oversight for supplier activities relating to quality, food safety, and product safety matters; set standards for supplier qualification, purchasing of raw materials and selection of contract manufacturers.
  • Provide input to research and development teams and plant personnel in connection with the design and development of new products or changes to existing portfolios and processes.
  • Develop organizational strategies, KPIs and actions to deliver safe quality product and drive continuous improvement year over year.
  • In connection with proposed acquisitions, oversee the due diligence review of the target’s regulatory, quality and food safety practices and programs.
  • Serve as a key resource for operational quality and food safety professionals handling inspections from FDA/USDA/CPSC regulatory agencies and third-party auditors such as the Global Food Safety Initiative and British Retail Consortium
  • Responsible to ensure compliance with global regulatory and food safety requirements.
  • With quality and operations leaders, resolve all potential quality and food safety issues and concerns, especially with regard to deficiencies identified by auditors and regulators; oversee corrective actions whenever necessary.
  • Serve as the point person for product investigations that have the potential to lead to external actions, such as marketplace withdrawals or product recalls; oversee a crisis management committee and decision-making in such matters while reporting to senior management
  • Oversee the GPC consumer complaint feedback program including coordinating and resolving the response to consumer complaints involving quality or food safety concerns and leveraging data analysis to establish product quality improvement priorities.
  • Chair the GPC Product Incident team and facilitate quality and product safety activities including investigations, root cause analysis, and corrective actions.
  • Participate in industry associations and maintain good external relations with government agencies.
  • Responsible for $2M annual budget

Education and Experience Profile

  • A minimum of 10 years’ experience in quality assurance and/or food safety management systems, including significant leadership roles relating to food safety, quality assurance and/or regulatory compliance
  • Preference to be given to candidates with at least a bachelor’s degree in food science, food chemistry, biology, microbiology or animal science; a combination of education and experience will be considered, provided that the candidate has demonstrated proficiency in food processing technology and food quality and regulations, standards and policies
  • Experience with and/or proficiency in FSMA (GMP’s and HARBPCs) and how they apply to food processing; HACCP certified, SSOPs, cGMPs and related food safety standards
  • Experience with animal foods is desired but candidates with strong backgrounds in human food safety will receive consideration
  • PCQI preferred
  • Experience with Product Safety and CPSC preferred

Required Skills

  • Strong leadership capabilities and interpersonal skills; must be able to develop and lead teams of technical experts and effectively influence and communicate with senior leadership
  • Ability to set vision and direction for a diverse team of food safety and regulatory compliance professionals
  • Detailed insight into risk management and an ability to make business judgments based on the application of regulatory requirements
  • Ability to prioritize, identify areas of greatest risk and immediate need
  • Excellent communications skills; ability to write reports, draft standards and policies
  • Expert understanding of food quality and GMP’s, safety regulations, food preventive controls, food microbiology
  • Willingness to travel within the U.S. and abroad (approximately 30%)
  • Background and experience in regulatory compliance, sanitation and industrial hygiene are desirable.
